IPGR Manufactures First Soda-Free Container Glass Bottle

Key challenges such as the melting and shaping of the new soda-free glass were solved with support from Vetropack, RWTH Aachen University, IPGR and its supporting members.

In co-operation with Christian Roos the Chair of Glass and Glass Ceramics at RWTH Aachen University, a team from International Partners in Glass Research (IPGR) has successfully produced the first primary soda-free bottle on an industrial scale at a member facility.

At Vetropack Italy, an industrial 250tpd furnace melted to newly-developed glass batch. No soda or sand was used in the trialled mixture which comprised 50% conventional cullet and 50% new raw materials. This resulted in primary CO2 emissions savings of approx. 10% in relation to the batch and cost advantages in the raw materials. The almost two-week test saw improvements in the chemical and thermal resistance properties of the glass.
